Biden news live: Latest updates as Russia reacts to ‘hostile’ moves and president reveals hacking sanctions

  • April 15, 2021

Former vice president Mike Pence is recovering after surgery to install a pacemaker, a small device to regulate a heartbeat.

Mr Pence is expected to fully recover and return to normal activity in the coming days following the procedure, described as “routine surgery”.

His former boss may have got a shot of his own after receiving a rare complement from Democrat senator Bernie Sanders.

While Sanders praised Joe Biden’s commitment to withdraw troops from Afghanistan before the 20th anniversary of September 11, he made clear it was a deal negotiated by the former president.

“I am not a great fan of Donald Trump and his administration, but he was right in trying to end endless wars,” Sanders said.

Joe Biden, meanwhile, continued the seemingly endless sanctioning of Russia in response to election interference and cyberattacks.

Ten Russian diplomats are to be sent packing from the US as Washington piles pressure on Vladimir Putin over election meddling and military aggression on the Ukraine border.

Bodycam video of police shooting Adam Toledo shows 13-year-old’s hands were up when he was shot

Body camera footage of the police killing of 13-year-old Adam Toledo appears to show an officer firing a single round into the chest of Toledo less than a second after he turns around with his hands up.

It does not appear in the video that Toledo had a weapon in his hand when he turned around, and his hands were up.

Immediately after the officer shoots Toledo, he calls for medical support and tends to his wounds. Officers can be seen trying to perform chest compressions on Toledo in an attempt to revive him.

CNN crew member collapses as Daunte Wright protesters pelt reporters with bottle and eggs

CNN has had a rough couple of days.

One of their news crews was chased away from demonstrations over the police shooting of Daunte Wright after one was hit in the head and others were struck by eggs.

Seconds after one of the TV crew told the crowd “it’s all peace”, a water bottle was thrown at the head of another man who stumbled and fell backwards onto the street curb.

“A bottle of water knocked you out? Hahahaha,” one of the protesters can be heard mocking in video footage posted online by Washington Examiner reporter Nic Rowan.

CNN reporter Miguel Marquez and his team were covering the unrest outside the Brooklyn Centre, Minnesota on Wednesday night after ex-officer Kim Potter was charged with second-degree manslaughter.

While CNN didn’t appear to cover the incident on either its broadcast, CNN.com, or in the Reliable Sources newsletter covering media, Mr Marquez said on Twitter his team was fine.

“I hope for equal justice under the law and will continue to report on this vital story as it unfolds,” he said.

BREAKING: Twitter suspends activist that filmed CNN director admitting focus ‘to get Trump out of office’

Twitter has permanently suspended the account of “Project Veritas” founder James O’Keefe after he secretly filmed a senior staff member seemingly admitting to CNN’s anti-Trump and pro-Biden bias.

His first video featured CNN employee, Charles Chester, talking to an undercover journalist about his views on the news network’s coverage of the 2020 presidential election.

Some of the quotes Chester was filmed saying include:

  • “Look what we did, we [CNN] got Trump out. I am 100% going to say it, and I 100% believe that if it wasn’t for CNN, I don’t know that Trump would have got voted out…I came to CNN because I wanted to be a part of that.”
  • “[Trump’s] hand was shaking or whatever, I think. We brought in so many medical people to tell a story that was all speculation — that he was neurologically damaged, and he was losing it. He’s unfit to — you know, whatever. We were creating a story there that we didn’t know anything about. That’s what — I think that’s propaganda.”
  • “We would always show shots of him [Biden] jogging and that [he’s] healthy, you know, and him in aviator shades. Like you paint him as a young geriatric.”
  • “It’s going to be our [CNN’s] focus. Like our focus was to get Trump out of office, right? Without saying it, that’s what it was, right? So, our next thing is going to be for climate change awareness.”

Twitter previously suspended the account of The New York Post during the election for reporting content belonging to Hunter Biden they say was found on a laptop, a decision they later said was a mistake.

The state of DC statehood: What House Democrats are proposing and why it will (probably) fail

The question of whether the nation’s capital should be a state was asked, answered and enshrined in the Constitution more than 200 years ago.

“The arguments for and against the idea land firmly in each tribe of conservative and progressive politics. Republicans call it a power grab to pack Congress – just as they accuse Democrats of wanting to “pack” the Supreme Court. Democrats call it fixing systemic inequality that is critical to achieving racial justice. Before dissecting those team-based extremities of the left and right wings in the US, it’s worth revisiting why the District of Columbia is, by design, not already a state to begin with. Like most American origin stories, it dates back to the Founding Fathers and the Constitution ratified in June 1788.”
